A year ago my youngest was en route to her college orientation with her father and brothers, while I was doing exactly what I've been doing this week, participating in my own school's teacher orientation week.
Who could have imagined what was coming?

What a memory! We had a couple of kids at church in school at Tulane and Loyola who also had to skeddadle.
Houston is still struggling to assimilate and assist the Katrina evacuees.
My grad school orientation at Tulane was canceled in 1992 due to the arrival of Hurricane Andrew. Though, I of course had a school to come back to after that!
Went there recently and I cried most of the time. It will take a while for New Orleans to bounce back from Katrina's devastation.
It's hard to believe it was only a year ago.
Hard to believe that New Orleans is still in such bad shape.
As I watch the anniversary coverage, and anticipate my own return visit to NOLA in less than 2 weeks, I'm filled yet again with grief, anger, and trepidation over what has happened and what lies ahead.
Wishing the Lovely Daughter a much smoother start to her sophomore year of college and the wonderful people of New Orleans the strength they need to recover both physically and emotionally.
