A Christmas Card

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

(The Gospel of John, as illustrated in The Book of Kells, Ireland, c. 800)

And so begins the most improbable of all stories, the one that we celebrate if we have the gift, or the willingness, or the loneliness, or the sorrow, or the stubbornness, or the wildness, to embrace that which is only just barely imaginable.

May your Christmas be one of a quiet and interior joy, a joy lengthened by the Solstice sunlight and heightened by the knowledge that there is more in heaven and earth than we have dreamed of.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

This passage always stumps me. I don't know what "the word" means. In the new thought church I attended off and on it was said, in one person's opinion, that it meant consciousness. So... "In the beginning was consciousness, and consciousness was God, and consciousness was with God and consciousness was God" which makes sense if that is your concept of God... that God is consciousness, divine mind, universal knowledge/intelligence, etc...
I'm curious as to how others interpret it. How do you define "the word"? Is there a common agreed upon meaning that I am unaware of?

Amazing, isn't it? I can't figure out which trait allows me to embrace the story -- probably some measure of several of them.

Stacy - your comment made me think for quite a while. I also got tangled up in "word made incarnate". I could not come up with something better than consciousness. Is it a UU church?
