Monday, Monday

~ Started writing a blog post and did nothing else that I had planned to do early this morning.

~ Had a three-hour lunch with the associate pastor at my field ed church; very informative and not at all optimistic about call possibilities in my Presbytery.

~ Went for a walk in the cemetery; discovered that the holes are dug for our memorial bench; had a long phone conversation with a friend about a possible memorial scholarship at the kids' Montessori school; took some photos.

~ Went to a church where I sometimes sit to pray; on the way in, ran into a Jesuit I know who told me about his sister's having lost a 19-year-old son to a car accident many years ago; went inside and sat there and cried.

~ Stopped at the grocery on the way home to pick up a couple of necessities, including a pumpkin.

~ The Lovely Daughter made us stir-fry for dinner; it was very, very good.

~ Packed up for tomorrow's drive; going to try to upload some pictures. Maybe one or two will show up here.

What does a "call within your presbytery" mean? Are they saying that there may not be a position for you within a diocese-like region?

I am sad for the sorrowful parts of your day, happy for the good parts, and wishing I could give you a hug and go for a walk with you.

Kathryn, in the Presby system, a minister and a church essentially make a match -- the church calls someone to an open position. A Presbytery is a region, like a diocese, but we don't have bishops or anyone else who assigns positions. The process takes months/years; I was on my church's last associate pastor nominating committee and it took us 2.5 years.

What is happening with the economy and the shrinking of the church is that small churches with one pastor and few members are closing, and larger churches are terminating associate pastor positions -- so the places that were the main fertile ground for new pastors out of seminary are evaporating. To mix metaphors completely.

I was going to say Thank God I have a valid teacher's license, but you know how much that is worth.

I'm sorry to hear that! How big a geographical area does your Presbytery cover? You have so much to offer - you really need to have the opportunity.

My church could solve the priest shortage in an instant by ordaining women but nobody seems able to figure it out. So depressing.
