Convention Watch

Having made fun of John McCain and his unknown number of houses of which he cannot keep track, in all fairness I now need to note that Barack Obama's Parthenon Pretensions are no more endearing. He has a perfectly nice house on the South Side of Chicago and I think that he should stick with that as his one and only.

And I expect to vote for him, but Oprah's role is another negative in my book.

Why is America so eager to follow's Oprah's lead on style, books, and political candidates? Or anything at all?

Am I really the only woman in America who has never been able to last through an entire hour of Oprah?

All this folderol is why I have chosen not to participate in the hype this election cycle. I will vote. But I can't deal with all the bulls***. Bleah!

And I'm right with you on Oprah...

Have only gone out of my way to see Oprah once, and that was for the guest. My lefty friends are gathering tonight to watch the big speech, as a lefty moderate (sick of the anger and hatred the parties thrive on) it may be too much, but there will be beer and salsa, which she is making with tomatoes I gave to her. If I can get my hand on the remote, I may turn it to FOX to rile the masses. wish me luck.

Good luck, stratoz! Heh-heh!

I'm tuning out of Obama's speech and I'll tune out of McCain's. Like lisa, I'm sick of the b.s. from both sides.

Right now I'm thinking that the TV and internet sound bite may be the enemy of informed democracy.

And yes, I'm with you on Oprah.

I agree that the speech was only a 6, that may be precisely because we were expecting so much. And as far as Oprah is concerned, I think that her strongest appeal is to a specific demographic that does indeed benefit from her message and works. That having been said, I can take her or leave her, most of the time the latter.

I don't deal well with Oprah or with the political BS this week. I did watch Hilary because I really like her but the constant cutaway shots to Bill were beyond annoying.

I agree with Quotidian Grace about the sound bites.

Oh, I LOATHE Oprah. Ever since, almost 20 years ago, I saw her telling a depressed young newlywed that she couldn't possibly be depressed because she had a better pedicure than Oprah, whom I guess is also a psychologist? Her ego is just too much for me.

Thanks Quotidian... I survived to blog about it.

Hey, I can't get through an Oprah episode either! I thought it was just me, so I never said anything...

No - you're not alone in your Oprah-less-ness. I've never seen an episode!

Yes, the sound bite is the enemy, but I love being able to access the full texts online these days, much better than being limited to excerpts in the local paper.

I loved watching the democratic convention, but more for Michelle Obama and the girls than anything else. something about the possiblity of a little girl influencing her president dad is reassuring to me. and I get mad at myself if I even pass Oprah on the channel changing ~ or if she picks a book I've read or am reading. blech. give me Ellen anyday.

The only time I've been able to live through an entire episode of Oprah is when I was living abroad and it was the only English-language show on TV.
And even then it was just the once.

I thought the stage was supposed to look like the white house/oval office?

anyway...yeah. definitely a 6 or 7 speech in my book.
