Temple Scroll

Guess what my son and I saw tonight?

Yep, a fragment of THE Temple Scroll, one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, outside of Israel for the first and only time and housed in a fabulous exhibit at a local museum. 2,000 years old, part of the Essene library at Qumran.

We were pretty excited.

I'll try to post more about the Dead Sea Scrolls tomorrow. For tonight, I am just really amazed. Right there, under glass, six inches from my nose.

I'm so glad you got to see this exhibit. We had a similar exhibit a couple of years ago in Houston--the museum that hosted it recorded the highest attendance to any special exhibit in its history.

It's just awe-inspiring to see these ancient texts, isn't it? I was so thrilled to see that one of them in the Houston exhibit was the motto of my younger daughter's college: How pleasant it is when brethren dwell together in unity. Gave me chills.

I am fascinated by ancient texts. I would be dumbfounded by this!

Whne we were in CA a few years ago, we went to the Huntington where they have several OLD books and maps on exhibit. Nothing quite as old as the Dead Sea Scrolls, but still... Being in the presence of that old writing gave me the most curious feeling of...continuity?

What does carbon dating say about those (not that I'm skeptical)?
